Leesa Thompson graduated from nursing school in 1990 with her Associates Degree in Nursing and moved to Charleston, South Carolina. In 1997, she furthered her nursing career and graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina with her Bachelors of Science in Nursing. For the next 9-10 years, she worked in various pediatric nursing areas including pediatric and neonatal intensive care, emergency level I trauma, cardiology, and pediatric burns. Wanting to broaden her nursing room experience, she became a traveling pediatric emergency room nurse for the next two years, which finally brought her back to Texas. She began working at Childrens Medical Center in the day surgery unit in 2000. She has volunteered her time and skill on several medical disaster teams. Recently she participated in a surgical mission trip with the LEAP Foundation to the Dominican Republic, providing surgical care to the underprivileged.
Leesa was recruited to the Plastic Surgery and Craniofacial Center in 2001 where she is currently the Craniofacial Nurse Coordinator. She brings with her 14 years of pediatric nursing experience, and a dedication to children with craniofacial needs. She recently became a member of the American Cleft Palate Association, and is currently attending Ball State University's nurse practioner program.
Leesa believes that healthcare must be family focused. When a child is born it is a happy occasion filled with anticipation. However, when a child is born with a craniofacial abnormality, the anticipation turns too uncertainty. Leesa assists the family through this transition to help them better understand their childs condition and treatment. She coordinates many functions, the most vital being that of liaison between the family and the craniofacial team. Leesa also coordinates evaluations and treatments, directs patients to the appropriate services and coordinates patient care in the hospital post-operatively. Throughout the course of treatment and recovery, Leesa is available to provide educational guidance and emotional support.
